7 days...

It's seven days until Thanksgiving. And since I find it so easy to find the things in life that I don't have, or that aren't right, I figured I'd count down these next 7 days by choosing one thing per day to be thankful for. It's so easy to get caught up in the "why me's" and "if only's" that I thought I'd take 7 full days to be positive, and grateful, and thankful.

I am thankful for him. This guy. Sparky. The love of my life. We've had ups, and we've had a lot of downs. But he loves so unconditionally. He acts like a tough guy, but is a softie at heart. He loves me. Unconditionally. Tells me the truth, even when the truth is hard. He shares my hopes. He shares my dreams. He's strong. He's vulnerable. He's imperfect. He's perfect...for me. He's opiniated. He's smart. He's sexy. He loves God. He loves animals. He wants to be the father of my children. He loves his Grandpa. He loves his Grandma. He loves deep. He hurts deep. He loves our families. He is the first person I want to share something wonderful with. He's the shoulder I cry on. He calms me. He is my soul mate. He is...mine.

North...

...To Alaska! That's where my hubby is going. In approximately 12 days Sparky will depart for the North Slope. Why? He's going to work there. Is it my first choice? Absolutely not. However, a change is necessary, therefore, a change is here.

In additional job news, he's applied, interviewed, and preliminarily accepted a position with Boeing. Surprise. This position is also in Alaska. This is a permanent position. At this point we're putting it in God's hands. We've put our needs in place, and if it's not acceptable to the position, then it's simply not meant to be. End of conversation.

I have to admit. The move has me worried. We both know that we don't want to end up in Alaska. It's a nice state, it looks gorgeous, but it's a long, long way from family. Sparky knows that he wants to be in Minnesota, and well, I'm just okay with that. Though not necessarily where we are. We'll see what happens. In the meantime, absolutely nothing has been resolved by our decision. Everything is still flopping in the wind. At this point, it's just our of our hands...and in His. Just like everything else.

In other news, fall has arrived in Southern Minnesota. It's cool, the windows are open the soft, cool breeze is slipping over the window sills, and I'm ready for a peaceful, solid slumber. Too bad there's laundry to do, blogs to write, emails to catch up on, and facebook to check. And of course, Sparky's back to rub. Usually I'd brush him off and tell him that I will another night...but our night's are numbered, and there will be many in between that he falls asleep alone. So tonight, I bid adeiu and go to rub my hubby's back.

'Til later.

The Very First One

Hello and Welcome to the rollercoaster! I'm Karla, married to Sparky. Happily for going on 12 years. In fact we will be celebrating our 12th anniversary this weekend. In honor of the milestone, well, lately it seems like a milestone, we're having ourselves a party!

We are currently not trying to conceive. We're taking a break. Just biding time in life while Sparky looks for a new job. He's been looking for a long time. A long time. Over a year. We were hoping to have something new, be somewhere new, by this summer. That didn't happen. So, we signed our lease and we're essentially stuck here until next spring.

I don't want you to assume that we're fully unhappy about that. Honestly, we love where we live. The problem? No job. Not the one that Sparky's looking for at this point in his career. So we're looking throughout the world for a new opportunity, the right opportunity. Now, how the hell do we find it?

I have a theory. Life is NOT at all what I'd planned. Nothing that I've dreamt of, planned for, worked hard for, has happened. Except for the hunky hubby, of course. So, anyway, back to my theory. I do not find my life, my life finds me. Why? Because we talked about getting a dog. For years. But he wanted this and I wanted this. Well, our Chessa found us. We weren't looking. In fact we told our friends NO, we did NOT want her. And then we fell in love. Ches is 9. She is the BEST dog ever. We adore her. Love her. And now I cannot imagine my life without her. She found us when we needed her most.

My theory came into play again on a cold December night in 2007. Sparky went to the garage to find something and came back in with a starving, abandoned kitty. Even when she found us we didn't want her, that sounds awful doesn't it? But we didn't. Our lease states we're not supposed to have cats. Alas, we fell in love and named her Woobie. That's a story I'll save for another time. And so, it seems, that this is the way we're meant to build our family.

Great things come in all different packages. When I met my husband he wasn't "the one" for me. How wrong I was. His package wasn't what I was looking for, but the gift inside was more than I could have hoped for. No, our journey hasn't been smooth, it's been a rollercoaster. I've always hated rollercoasters...but I might have to change my mind.
